Introducing the Best Life Book Club! Yay!
The Best Life Book Club is Mamaguru’s new online book club devoted to reading books that will make you think, make you feel and inspire you to live your best life! We will read the very best titles from mindfulness, happiness research and brain science. Each and every one of these books has moved me and prompted insights and understanding in my life. I’m so excited to share them with you! Reading is such a keen pleasure in life, but sometimes it’s hard to know which books are the right ones to read. The Best Life Book Club’s goal is to help us find great titles that will be worth the hours we trade to read them.
Have you ever read a book that just floored you and then had no one to talk to about it?
That’s happened to me too many times to count! My poor husband has to listen to me wax poetic about all kinds of books he hasn’t read. The Best Life Book Club is a community where we can share our thoughts and ask questions about the books we read. You can share a quote that just blew you away, and the rest of us will cheer for it enthusiastically. You can point out an inconsistency that bothers or puzzles you, and ask if other people have a different way of looking at it. You can share a connection you see in your own life or point us to books love. It’s going to be fantastic!
Is the Best Life Book Club Right for You?
There are so many wonderful books in this world; it would be impossible to read them all. We must be discerning. Reading a book takes time, so choose your titles wisely. The Best Life Book Club is for people who:
- care about living a good life.
- cultivate meaning in their life.
- are curious about how their mind works.
- who love to be inspired.
- live a mindful life (or at least try to).
- like to challenge and grow their way of thinking.
- want to connect to other positive people.
- think happiness is important.
- love to read books that speak to their spirit.
If you hit a couple of those bullet points, this book club is the place for you. Keep reading! If not, I encourage you to find a tribe of readers that suit your tastes.
How the Best Life Book Club Works
An online book club is a bit different than a book club with your friends. (Sorry, you have to provide your own wine!) What’s great about it is that we can connect with all sorts of people from around the world who are interested in the same kinds of books. Hopefully this will lead to interesting discussions because we’ll have such a wide variety of perspectives. Our book club is loosely formatted. Here’s what you need to do.
1. Buy the book!
I’ll give you about a week to pick it up. Of course, libraries should carry the same titles, so you can get it for free if you’d like.
2. Join the Mindful Spot.
This is our Facebook Group which is basically is a group of people who support each other in living happy, mindful lives. I call it the positive place on Facebook. (We need that, right?) Although I will post here on Mamaguru and you are always welcome to comment, I think the nature of a group lends itself to better discussions.
3. Invite your friends!
Real life friends and online friends are welcome. We want to gather as many people as we can to create lively discussions. If you know someone interested in living a beautiful life, tell them about The Best Life Book Club. Any social share will be greatly appreciated.

4. Read the book.
No skipping straight to the wine! Read the book. Seriously, that’s the whole point. Highlight quotes you love and jot down any brilliant insights you gain. I’ll prompt a discussion about halfway through and then at the end. You can ask questions or start a conversation about it anytime you want to.
5. Share your thoughts!
As I mentioned, there will be discussions, so please participate and share your unique perspective. Ask questions. Share stories and the wisdom you’ve gained. You can do this on Mamaguru, or in The Mindful Spot.
We can connect across social media with our hashtag #BestLifeBookClub, so if you tweet or post something on Instagram about the book, go ahead and use the hashtag. Make an image of your favorite quote and use the hashtag. I can’t wait to see what words move you.
March’s Best Life Book Club Selection
Ok, I know you’re dying to find out what our first selection will be. Drum roll, please. The first book we will read is Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers by Anne Lamott.
This book is just knock-your-socks-off-good. If you are unfamiliar with Lamott, this is your lucky day because she is an amazing writer and her spiritual insights are so humble, real and funny. Reading this book is like sitting around the kitchen table with a friend and talking about how to make sense of the beauty and pain of being human. There is no dogma or judgement in her work. Whatever your beliefs are, you will feel included in her understanding of life and spirituality.
Let’s get started: buy the book, join the group and invite your friends!

That’s wonderful, Kate! Good news: it’s a short read!

This sounds like such a great idea! I’m going to order the book and see if I can make time to read it. That’s where I always fall short- even though my new year resolution was more ‘grown up’ reading! Still a struggle.
Leah | Five for the Road says
I love this idea!! I tend to read books that help inspire my day to day life.

A book club sounds like a great avenue to discuss how you feel and what you think about books you’ve read. Now if only I can find time to read a book. Lol
