Last night, as I drove to the PTO meeting at twilight, the moon caught my eye. It was a fine sliver of a crescent moon, always a treat, but what made it spectacular was how low-slung it appeared. Rather than showing off its best side, it was the bottom of the moon that reflected the sun’s light.
“Look kids!” I exclaimed, “The moon is a smile!”
Nearby a bright star, which I suspect was Jupiter, twinkled. A wink! When we got to school I shuttled my kids across the street for a better view. My friend’s kids were there too, and we blocked a bit of traffic on a dark street so everyone could see.
A smile and a wink.
I considered taking a picture. My phone was right there, but I thought the better of it. It would probably be grainy, and snapping it would snap me out of the moment.
When God, the universe, and the heavens smile down at you and wink, there is no place else to be but present, smiling and winking back.
As a consolation prize, in case you missed the smiling moon, here’s a great smile from Jack.
Have a wonderful day!
