Story time is a favorite time at my house, and every so often we come across a book that is utterly magical. I’ve decided to start sharing our favorite titles with you, simply because these are treasures in our home. Track these titles down at the library or buy them for a child you love. They are best of the best.

Pi-shu, the Little Panda by John Butler
This is the book that inspired me to write reviews. It is just so beautiful, I want every child to read it! We stumbled across it at the library and couldn’t put it down.
Plot Synopsis
Pi-shu is a baby panda living in the mountains of China. The story follows him as he grows from a newborn to a child. When his valley home is threatened by deforestation, Pishu and his mom, Fei Fei, head up Misty Mountain to find a safer place to live.
Why You’ll Love this Book
First of all, Butler’s realistic and tender illustrations will tug at your heart strings. It is impossible not to fall in love with these pandas. It’s amazing how much emotion he is able to draw in their eyes.
Secondly, this is a really wonderful introduction to both pandas and China. Although it is a fictional story, lots of true facts about pandas are shared and come alive in the story. It also touches on environmental themes, although it’s not heavy-handed with MESSAGE. My boys fell head-over-heels for pandas after reading this. We even bought them little panda toys which they take care of by pretending to feed them bamboo. Learning came alive!
Best Ages for this Book?
This is a picture book without too much text, so ages 2-6 should love it.
