Pumpkin Patch Craft

Once the calendar is flipped and kiddos see a pumpkin, life is all about Halloween.

Every year we make a large scale Pumpkin Patch Craft.  It’s a fun family project, and as my kids grow it gets better and better.  Here’s the 2012 post for your inspiration.

Sometimes it’s fun to have kiddos work on a large scale art project.  Our annual Pumpkin Patch Craft got even bigger this year.  It took about a week to complete by doing one small part a day.  Max and Jack were so excited to see it come together.

Besides practicing key art skills like cutting, painting and gluing, they learned that you need to take steps to create something big.  Teaching them to break projects into doable steps  is a great life lesson.  Seeing that something wonderful takes time and lots of work to create helps build perseverance and vision.

The end result is fabulous!

Here are the steps.

We only did one each day to build excitement and make it easier for me to prep.

Max cuts out pumpkin shapes.

Jack cuts out grass. He’s new to cutting and this helps build his skills.

The next day they glued faces on the jack o’ lanterns using pieces I had cut out. I love how they put them together.

The only long paper we had was white, so we painted it blue. This was tons of fun and added a cool texture to the sky.

The kids glued googly eyes and pom poms to make bats.

I thought I had more black pom poms, but green works too.

They made ghosts with paper towels for an airy feel. They only pasted them to the top of the paper, so they flutter off of the page.

My printer broke, so I traced witch coloring pages from my computer screen. This ended up being good, because I left off the broom for a more creative twist.

They later cut and glued the brooms with construction paper. They were so excited to see it all come together.

I love that my kids associate holidays with making things, rather than just buying stuff.  Max calls the Pumpkin Patch beautiful.  They love showing it off to company.  Their pride is palpable.

Mine too.

    Rebecca,

This is a fantastic project. What a great idea to have it created one part at a time. I am sure the boys love the finished project and are proud of their creation. You are a very creative and fun mom.
