Happy Lunar New Year! 新年快樂

.

Gong Hay Fat Chow!

Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, and this year it’s the Year of the Dragon!

We are celebrating this wildly at our house.  I adore holidays and it’s such a great opportunity to enrich and expand our kiddos’ cultural horizon.  This evening we will be attending the Miami Children’s Museum’s Dragon Parade.  It’s sure to be spectacular.  Afterwards we will eat a Chinese dinner at home consisting of Egg Drop Soup, Sweet Potato Wontons, Stir Fry with Maifun Noodles, tea and fortune cookies!

I’ll share pictures of our evening tomorrow, but here are the signs of Chinese New Year around our house so far:

Jack thought this lantern had the shape of a pumpkin. Good connection.
Red carnations and a Buddha stature adorn our table.
Our kiddos received coins in red envelopes just like kids in China.
We also made our own paper lanterns and hung them above our dining room table. We colored them with black and gold crayons and decorated with stickers. I scrapped my gold glitter plan, but will use it next year. I was very impressed with Max’s scissor work.
Another small gift were dragon fans.

The kids have been saying, Gong Hay Fat Chow all day.

We are also singing and acting out a Dragon Song by Jean Warren to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

Dragon, dragon, dance around.
Dragon, dragon, touch the ground.
Dragon, dragon, shake your head.
Dragon, dragon, tongue so red.
Dragon, dragon, stamp your feet.
Dragon, dragon, coming down the street!

I will tell them the Chinese folk tale, Little Mouse’s Big Trick, adapted by Jean Warren for a bedtime story.  I’ve mentioned Jean Warren a few times and will in later posts.  She has an amazing website called Preschool Express which I cannot recommend highly enough.

We have also been playing with a Chinese zodiac craft we made at a Japanese New Year’s celebration a few weeks ago.  (Yes, it’s confusing.  I’ll post about that another time.)
The kids stamped all the zodiac animals in the proper spot and then cut out their circles. We attached the two with a brad and it’s great fun to look at the animals. You could use clip art or pictures if you didn’t have stamps.

For now, I must go.  Time to dust off my wok and celebrate the coming of a dragon!
