Nothing is more enchanting to a child this time of year than a Christmas tree. Here are two wonderful books that celebrate the tannenbaum. One is a classic; the other is just plain fun.
Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect by Richard H. Schneider, illustrated by Elizabeth J. Miles
Basic Plot:
Long ago, all Christmas trees were perfect. Each one strove to be the best so it could be chosen for the queen. Little Pine was a shoe-in until he took pity on small animals in the harsh winter. He offered shelter and food, which made him look scruffy. The queen realized why he sacrificed his appearance and gave him the honor of being her tree.
Why You’ll Love It:
This beautiful tale offers lessons of compassion and inner beauty. The illustrations are beautiful and many have a light dusting of glitter. This story will inspire your children to look closely at your tree and create a story of what animals it helped while celebrating its imperfections.
Best Ages:
Preschool and early elementary
Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree by Robert Barry
Basic Plot:
A rich man orders a tall fine tree that is too big, so he chops off the top. The lopped top is given to his maid who also find it too tall. Bit by bit, animals and people trim the top of the tree until finally everyone, including the mice who live in Mr. Willowby’s mansion, has a piece of Mr. Willowby’s Christmas tree.
Why You’ll Love It:
This delightful book is fun to read. As the tree gets smaller and smaller, it’s hard to imagine who will enjoy it next. The drawings are vibrant and charming. The lesson is that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The rhymes and quick pace make it refreshing to read aloud.
Best Ages:
Preschoolers love it!
