News from 20,000 Feet

It is September which means we are home.

Home is Miami.

After nearly a month visiting family in Washington State, we are settling back into our tropical lives.  I apologize for my sparse posts, especially my beloved Making Groceries column.  Being out of my element shifted subtle elements inside of me.  I have always been that way: going through times of deep thought to be followed by prolific writing.  It is important sometimes to live without recording, to experience without trying to pin down the experience.  I will be back on track as soon as my camera’s USB cable arrives, as it is trailing behind me by mail.  There is much to share and exciting changes for mamaguru.  Stay posted….

Until then, here are a few snapshots of our flight travel, a thrill for Max and Jack and an endurance test for Andres and me, but so much better than last year’s trip.

At the airport, waiting for our first plane.
Jack with loveys in hand.
The boys described everything they saw with perfect vocabulary thanks to our many airplane books.
The air vents were a favorite discovery.
Max exclaimed, “I’m taking a shower! I’m taking a shower!” Jack joined in his chant. What an oddly accurate comparison.
Skymall and the airplane safety diagram were huge hits.
Super Max received his first superman toy, a just reward considering how I accidentally ruined his chances for presidential candidacy.

Here’s what happened:

I flew back with the boys sans Daddy.  Our biggest hurdle was the bathroom.  All three of us had to do our business in very cramped quarters.  First, our newly potty-trained Max used his child seat insert to use the toilet.  Then I took my turn, followed by Jack on the changing table.

The hustle and bustle, diaper bag, potty seat and three bodies were frustrating and claustrophobic to say the least.  When I finally finished our first round, I plopped Max of the room, propped Jack on my hip and wiped down the sink with my free hand.

“I wish I had my camera,” I heard our flight attendant remark.  A few light chuckles followed.  I thought nothing of it: my kids are cute and passengers are a captive and bored audience.

Then everyone stared at me.

Hmm… my kids were quiet and I’m not exactly a stunning woman when I fly solo.

Then I looked down at Max.  I had forgotten to help him pull up his pants.  He had inadvertently flashed the entire plane.  My sweet boy blinked unaware as I hastily covered him.

We still had 2,100 miles to go.

Ah, well, we made it home.  I was greeted by my sorely missed husband, a dozen surprised roses and a spanking new bathroom.

Is just me, or does life keep getting better?

every. single. day.
