Great Children’s Christmas Books About God

I know I’m not the only mama who struggles to keep Jesus as the central theme of Christmas.  There is way too much emphasis on a commercial version of Santa that seems to promote greed over generosity.  Children’s books are a great way to gently remind children about the real reason we celebrate.  Here are two gems.

God Gave Us Christmas by Lisa Tawn Bergen, illustrated by David Hohn

Basic Plot:

When Little Cub has lots of questions about Santa Claus and Christmas, Mama Bear takes her on a short trip to find God.  As the polar bears explore the North Pole, Mama Bear points out how they can find God everywhere as she answers Little Bear’s persistent questions about Santa.

Why You’ll Love It:

Just like our kids, Little Cub, poses real questions about the importance of Santa and presents and doesn’t just let it go.  Mama Bear’s answers are excellent, so it really does address refocusing our attention on the true meaning of Christmas in a realistic way.  Also, the illustrations are beautiful and engaging.

Best Ages:

toddler and preschool

Tonight You Are My Baby: Mary’s Christmas Gift by Jeannine Q. Norris, illustrated by Tim Ladwig

Basic Plot:

This is the telling of Jesus’ birth from the perspective of Mary.  Although she is excited to meet God, she is also savoring the moment that Jesus is her baby.  The refrain that causes my eyes to well over and over is, Tomorrow you will be king, but tonight you are my baby.

Why You’ll Love It

This book captures the dual nature of Christ beautifully.  It humanizes Mary, Joseph and Jesus in the most tender way.  They are very much a young family in awe.  I have cried many times while reading it, because it just touches my heart.  The artwork is stunning.  This is currently Jack’s favorite book.

Best Ages:

New mamas (celebrates motherhood) and preschoolers (especially if the kids are going through a baby-obsessive phase)

As always my book reviews are both honest and unsolicited.  If you decide to buy these books online, please use the links I provided to ensure that I get a small commision.  I recommended them because they are wonderful and I’d like to share them, but it is nice that there is a program which enables me to be rewarded for referrals.
